What is a novel anyway!



I have just discovered that there is a distinction between a 40,000 word count novel compared to 39,999, novellla! There I was, proud that I had completed my first Paradise ‘novel’. But it turns out it is only a 37k novella. This discovery made me feel slightly disappointed. I feel like I need to up my game for my next novel!


According to a reedsy.com article (How many words in a novel), the actual definitions and word counts are further complicated depending on the type of book and genre.


General Fiction word counts


  • Short story: under 7,500

  • Novelette: between 7,500 and 17,500

  • Novella: between 17,500 and 40,000

  • Novel: over 40,000

  • Fiction novel 80,000 and 110,000
